ASUS is proud to announce that the ASUS W90 has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the fastest notebook in the world. Powered by an Intel® CoreTM 2 Extreme QX9300 processor and equipped with an ATI® Mobility Radeon® HD4870X2 graphics solution with 1GB of GDDR3 VRAM, the ASUS W90 achieved an unprecedented 3DMark06 score of 20324 at a recent overclocking gathering in Norway. This announcement comes shortly after the ASUS W90 clinched CNET’s coveted Editors’ Choice award. In the review, CNET’s Joshua Goldman, the reviewer, said the multimedia powerhouse delivered “mobile gaming performance [that] is tough to beat”, pointing out that the W90 had “outpaced all other notebooks in the processor-intensive performance tests” he conducted when running in overclocked mode.

Toshiba Satellite L Series Notebooks

who do you turn to when it comes to choosing a machine to help see you through the college years or one that is suitable for everyday use in both the home and at the office? Toshiba is one of the more reliable brands out there, although their releases hasn’t been exactly exciting enough in terms of being fashionable, although their notebooks have been pretty reliable in their own right judging by user feedback over the years. Well, Toshiba is back with a new Satellite L Series of notebooks which will target budget-conscious consumers as well as “Back-to-School” shoppers, striking a careful balance between style, performance and cost with prices starting from a somewhat high end netbook level – $549.99.

There are four model classes available from the Satellite L Series, where the first of them would be the lightweight 14″ Satellite L510/L515, followed by the versatile 15.6″ and 16″ Satellite L500/L505 with the larger 17.3″ Satellite L550/L555 desktop replacement leading the bunch in terms of system specifications. All four systems will come with interesting features including HD TruBrite widescreen displays, USB Sleep-and-Charge and hard drives ranging from 250GB to 500GB. Apart from that, you also get a whole host of expansion ports, Wi-Fi connectivity to get you surfing no matter where you are and a choice of either Intel or AMD processor if you’re a fan of either camp.

All of these new Toshiba notebooks are RoHS-compatible, where they effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. The packaging is also made out of 90% recyclable materials alongside mercury-free LED displays. You can pick up the Satellite L500/L505 from $549.99 upwards, while the Satellite L510/L515 is going from $649.99 with the Satellite L550/L555 starting from $649.99.

Gateway announces its new NV series notebooks

Gateway has been very busy these couple of days and have also announced its new NV series 15.6-inch notebooks. The series will start of with two models, one base on AMD and other on Intel platform. Both systems will use the same 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen with a 1366×768 resolution and will come with Windows Vista Home Premium OS.

The US $499.99 priced Gateway NV5214u features a 2.1GHz Athlon 64 X2 QL-64 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 memory, Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics via AMD RS780MN chipset, 320GB of hard drive space, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Gigabit LAN, 8x DVD SuperMulti optical drive, four USB ports and D-Sub and HDMI output.

The second one has identical specifications, except of course the fact that it is based on Intel’s platform with Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 working at 2.1GHz which is paired up with Intel’s GM45 chipset with GMA 4500MHD. This one also has a bit higher US $599.99 price tag.

Both drives have the same 372x250x26-37mm (WxDxH) dimensions and both will come with a 6-cell Lithium Ion 4400mAh battery. The weight on the other hand is not the same as according to the specs, the cheaper AMD based one weighs 3.1kg while the other one is a bit lighter at 2.65kg.

Asus UX30 thin and light notebook previewed

You might recall Asustek’s UX30 CULV-based thin and light 13-incher, showcased at Computex. It’s a good looking machine, and now we’re starting to see some early previews.

TechDigest has done a brief preview of the UX30, and now we like it even more. The sleek design is eyecatching. It is under 2cm thick and with brushed aluminuim in abundance, it just looks classy. Some connectors are hidden under a plastic flap, to streamline the gently curved sides.

Unfortunately, the good looks and materials come at a price, a high price. Once it hits retail in September, at £999 it could be the priciest CULV-based notebook on the market. You can check out the preview here.

In case you can’t wait that long, you could consider the UX50, a 15.6-inch model based on Intel’s SU3500 CPU. It packs Geforce G105M discrete graphics with 512MB of memory, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive and costs just under €900.
